I finally caved in and bought an iPhone a while back. Here are the sticking points in my brain about how it changed me. Pretty amazing when you can develop a product that does this.
1. The alarm - How incredibly revolutionary is it to be able to set an alarm for JUST weekdays? Granted it’s not the only phone or device that has this, but it’s MY first device with such a feature. I never have to worry about setting my alarm ever again unless it’s for something out of the ordinary. Cool.
2. Contacts - In the old days, it was always a battle to keep the contacts synced between my Mac and my phone. Granted I even had a phone that supported iSync. This process was tedious and really outdated my stuff. The iPhone and it’s Google Sync integration means that I have a single repository of contacts that are updated immediately. No more horsing around trying to find a number that was in my phone but not in Address Book/Gmail. What a nightmare.
3. Calendar - Again, this in part goes to Google and their Google Sync wizardry. I suck at keeping appointments. If anyone asks me if I want to do something, I generally say yes because I am oblivious to what else I have going on on a certain day (sorry to all the people I’ve done this to). Having a tool like the Calendar app on the iPhone makes it very easy to not only see what I have going on, but also add stuff the minute I hear about it. If I don’t catch it then, it is gone forever. The phone has invariably made me a somewhat more responsible person when it comes to keeping appointments/stuff.
In the end, having a nice web browser on your phone is way cool, but not life changing. It is nice to be able to shut people up with a swift Google search on the topic of discussion too, but it’s not one of those things that you come to absolutely rely on. The same thing goes for the hoarde of other apps out there, like the BofA App (which sucks btw.) that allows you to see your bank balance at any time. I could have an iPhone with those 3 apps and really still have a device that changed the way I exist.
Finally hung this up in the office. We’ll see how long it holds up.
